  Frequently Asked Questions

Please see information below on any questions you may have regarding the Solar Eclipse Viewing Packages and Accommodation information.

1. Why book with PDEM?

PDEM is the only independent local Far North Queensland Company offering these unique tours combining the best viewing locations with premier accommodation options. We know the best attractions to combine with the eclipse viewing to make your time in beautiful FNQ the best possible holiday.

2. What will be the best viewing location for the eclipse?

Go to the NASA website:
http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEgoogle/SEgoogle200/SE2012Nov13Tgoogle.html
(please note: the date is US time zone on this page. Austrilain date is the 14th Nov 2011)

That show the absolute prime “red-line” viewing path for the eclipse. PDEM has secured cruise boats that will sit on this red-line and the Wanghetti and Four Mile Beach exclusive access areas for these eclipse packages.

3. How long will the eclipse last?

The total solar eclipse lasts for approx 2 minutes and 4 seconds at our exclusive locations.  All times below are in Queensland local time (Daylight Saving does not apply in Queensland)

Sunrise5:34am
Start of Partial Eclipse   5:44am   Moon begins to cross the sun
Start of Total Eclipse6:38amThe first diamond ring effect occurs just before. Totality is for 2mins 4 secs
Maximum Eclipse6:39am
End of Total Eclipse6:40amSun re-emerges from behind the sun (diamond ring 2)
End of Partial Eclipse7:39am

4. What happens if it is a cloudy day for the eclipse?

We definitely don’t want clouds that day. November is normally clear, but if it is overcast we still get the darkness and the goose bumps. Keep your fingers crossed.

5. What equipment is provided at the solar eclipse viewing locations?

If you are on a cruise boat we will provide everything you need. Boats will only be taking the appropriate numbers so that all on board have excellent vantage points and breakfast, lunch and all equipment is provided. If you are at Wanghetti or Four Mile Beach we will provide a chair and refreshments. Breakfast and a tour at Hartley’s Crocodile Adventure Park will top off an amazing morning for those at Wanghetti.

6. Will you provide eclipse glasses or filters?

Yes. We are currently sourcing the best possible glasses and filters. It is imperative that protective eyewear is used when viewing the eclipse.

7. How do I get to the eclipse and the other events?

Air-conditioned coaches will be provided for all transfers to and from the airport, eclipse, tours and functions.

8. What choice do I have in the accommodation packages presented?

The packages are all inclusive. They have been designed to show you all the region has to offer and of course include the premium red-line viewing. Choose your arrival date and the rest you can leave to us.

9. Which is the best accommodation option?

Choose your location first. Where would you prefer to be based? From there it comes down to budget and type and configuration of room you’d prefer. Please contact us if you are unsure what’s best for you.

10. Is breakfast included?

Only if specified.

11. Are there any other accommodation options?

Other options (including private exclusive holiday homes) may become available, but don’t hesitate - the demand worldwide to see this phenomenon is incredible.

12. Is there an opportunity to stay for fewer nights?

Not with these packages.

13. Can we extend our stay?

Yes – tell us what you want and we will organize this for you.

14. Can we book additional tours after we arrive?

Absolutely – hot-air ballooning, white water rafting, scuba diving or skydiving – whatever your preference we can organize the tour and the door-to-door transfer.

15. Is it best to arrive or depart on the day of the eclipse?

For all of these first packages departure is on the afternoon of the eclipse. For future packages sales it will make no difference. Whatever fits your holiday plans best.

16. What will the weather be like?

November weather in the far north Queensland tropics is stunning. Each day will be filled with blue skies starting with a low of 22 degrees Celsius and warming up to 31 in the heat of the day.

17. If I cannot make the trip due to an emergency what is the cancellation and refund policy?

Please see the attached terms and conditions.

18. Which is the best eclipse viewing location?

Take your pick – on board a cruise ship sitting right on top of the eclipse red-line or sitting on a chair on Wangetti Beach or Four Mile Beach. Check your preferred eclipse package is available – then book your package by paying your deposit. Your flights can be confirmed in early 2012 and then confirm with full payment of the balance of your Eclipse Festival Package.

Please note red-line viewing options are strictly limited.

19. What do I book first - my eclipse packages or my flights?
